Historic Tennessee Theatre
The Historic Tennessee Theatre has a long and colorful past. The Tennessee Theatre, owned and operated by Publix, was opened in 1928. The first movie shown is "The Fleet's In," starring Clara Bow. When it opened in 1928, the Tennessee Theatre was hailed as “the South’s most beautiful theatre.” Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Tennessee Theatre is honored as the Official State Theatre of Tennessee. Now the historic venue is transformed into a world-class performing arts facility with a larger stage, greatly improved backstage and dressing areas, new seats, elevators, reproductions of original carpets, light fixtures and paint surfaces, modernized restroom facilities, and state-of-the-art technical equipment. Our experienced and friendly staff will provide you the highest level of service toward the goal of a successful event and a memorable evening for your guests. Throughout the planning and production of your event, do not hesitate to communicate any questions or concerns. We are available to make your experience at the Tennessee Theatre an exceptional one. We look forward to working with you and are honored that you have considered the historic Tennessee Theatre for your event. The Tennessee Theatre is committed to making the arts accessible to everyone in our community. The Youth Arts Alliance education outreach program was founded in 2007 by corporate partner Quantum Environmental & Engineering Services, LLC (QE2) in an effort with the Historic Tennessee and Bijou Theatres to provide an opportunity for school age children to attend performances throughout the year. Additional funding for this program is provided by Variety of Eastern Tennessee, area companies, foundations and individual donations. Dress code. There is no specific dress code for The Tennessee Theatre. Some events such as the Symphony and Opera will draw a dressier crowd. Most people enjoy dressing up to go to the theatre, but you will see people wearing everything from casual to Sunday best, and on Opera nights, formal wear. Smoking. The Tennessee Theatre is a non-smoking venue. This rule is strictly enforced. Parking. Free parking is available for most night and weekend performances at the State Street garage located behind the theater, as well as the nearby Locust Street and Market Square garages.
