Lessons are taught by an all-volunteer music faculty. At The Joy of Music School, weekly lessons and instruments are provided to disadvantaged and at-risk kids at no charge. |

The Joy of Music Youth Music School
Welcome to the Joy of Music School - a Nonprofit Organization. The School was founded in 1998 in Knoxville, Tennessee upon the belief that all young people should have the opportunity to experience and create music regardless of income. The School is supported through gifts and grants from foundations, arts councils, individuals and corporations. In June of 2003 we acquired a new building, and moved out of our former offices at The Boys and Girls Club. The School is governed by a volunteer board of directors, made up of local business leaders, professionals, cultural and civic leaders, musicians, secondary and public school educators and administrators, as well as local citizens wanting to bring the joy of music to all youth. If your children want music lessons and are on the free/reduced lunch program, then you qualify for admission to the School. We never charge any money for the services we provide. Home schoolers and families from outside Knox County are welcome too. We want to get your child an instrument and a teacher as soon as possible! We endeavor to broaden the lives of financially disadvantaged young people, to teach good habits that will carry over into their lives' work, and to expose young people to new opportunities for success. The Joy of Music School seeks to provide for students the following: - Musical instruments and related accessories - Special musical opportunities through a combination of private and group lessons, ensemble participation, plus music enrichment classes and experiences - Support and encouragement, so that students may develop their artistic potential to the highest level possible Our Private Lessons. We offer lessons on all band and orchestral instruments, piano, guitar, and voice. If you meet the qualifications below we encourage you to fill out an application. Please be aware, however, that we currently maintain a waiting list for our programs. Up to 200 youth per year are admitted into the program, depending upon the number of available volunteer teachers. Instruments are provided at no charge, and classes are offered in band and orchestral instruments, piano, guitar, and voice. Volunteer Teaching Staff. These individuals give one to three hours per week teaching disadvantaged and/or at-risk kids in piano, drums, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, violin, voice, flute, guitar and more. The Joy of Music School could not exist without the generous contribution of time and talent these people give to our young students. Are you one of the countless people in the area who have had years of music lessons, but are not playing regularly? If so, then you might think you can't teach private music lessons. But please consider the following: There are dozens of kids on our waiting list. The vast majority of the kids on our waiting list have never had a private lesson in their lives. You really can help a young beginner! Are you willing to give an hour a week? We're betting that even if you're not jamming every weekend, or taking your bows with the symphony, your music teacher would be proud to know you're passing on your training to a beginning student at The Joy of Music School. We'll help you get started.
