Jan Campbell is the owner-director. She is a certified Iyengar yoga teacher, having received her teacher's training at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco. She has traveled to India on several occasions to study with the Iyengars. Jan has taught yoga since 1986 and is the founder and director of the Yoga Center in Nashville where she now teaches a full schedule of classes each week. Jan, born in 1933, is an inspiration to many. An enthusiastic and inspirational teacher, she encourages her students to understand and go beyond their limitations. Her joy and skills as a teacher come from her evolving personal work and practice which reflect in her teaching and her life. Her classes build strength as well as flexibility and focus on stress reduction and deep relaxation techniques.
Our Classes:
- Introductory. For those who are just beginning their yoga journey or for those who want to review the basics.
- Beginners / Continuing Beginners. For those who have completed and equivalent of the introductory course and understand the basics of Iyengar yoga. Refinement of the standing poses and shoulder stand, plus introduction to head balance.
- Intermediate / Advanced. This class is for those comfortable with inversions and backbends. Variations in the inversions will be introduced, plus more intensive exploration of seated poses and backbends.
Preparing for a yoga class. We recommend that you wear what is comfortable and also allows you to move and stretch. Most people find that shorts or footless tights and a T-shirt work fine. The teacher should be able to see the outline of your legs, so no sweat pants please. Yoga classes are done in bare feet.  We provide mats and blankets for students to use. It is easier to do the yoga postures on an empty stomach so you are advised not to eat a heavy meal 1-2 hours before class.
Yoga for a new you. Enjoy all the benefits of yoga. With even fifteen minutes of regular daily practice you can begin to feel your body, mind, and emotions all coming into harmony. You'll become stronger, more flexible, more stress resistant - and you'll have fun doing it. The atmosphere of a yoga class is supportive and respectful of all students. You are encouraged to start where you are and work with the body you have today. If you're stressed out, there's the opportunity to learn to relax. If your body needs toning, yoga will provide strength without stressing your joints. If you're feeling stiff, you'll enjoy the gentle stretching provided in a yoga class. Best of all, yoga requires no special equipment - if you have a body, you can start today!
Namaste. Yoga classes often end with the instructor using this beautiful Sanskrit salutation that comes from India.
